Ba Den Mountain Spring Festival: A Day Trip to Tay Ninh’s Sacred Peak

Rising sharply from the flat plains of Tay Ninh, Ba Den Mountain is the highest peak in southern Vietnam and one of the region’s most beloved pilgrimage sites. Every spring, thousands of travellers make the journey from Ho Chi Minh City to join the Ba Den Mountain Festival – a lively mix of faith, nature, and local food that makes a perfect day trip from the city.

A Peak Steeped in Legend

Local legend tells of a young woman named Ly Thi Thien Huong who chose the mountain as her refuge, and the temples built in her honour have drawn pilgrims for centuries. Today the mountain is both a spiritual destination and a modern resort area, with a cable car, gardens, and sweeping views.

When and Where to Go

The festival takes place in spring, usually from the middle of the first lunar month through to the third, which generally means February to April. The mountain is in Tay Ninh province, about 100 km northwest of Ho Chi Minh City – roughly a two to two-and-a-half hour drive. Most visitors come as a day trip, though staying overnight lets you catch the sunrise.

What to See and Do

  • Ride the cable car – a smooth, scenic ascent past forest and rock, with a stop at the pagoda complex.
  • Visit the mountain temples – the Linh Son Pagoda and the summit temple are the spiritual heart of the festival.
  • Climb (or stroll) to the top – hikers can take the stone steps; everyone can enjoy the lookout points.
  • See the giant Buddha statue – the Tay Bo Da Son statue sits above a sea of clouds on many mornings.
  • Try local dishes – Tay Ninh is famous for its banh trang phoi suong (sun-dried rice paper) and muoi tom (shrimp salt).

Start early. The cable car queues grow quickly on festival weekends, and the mountain is most beautiful in the cool morning air before the crowds arrive.

Local Tips for Foreign Travelers

  • Wear comfortable shoes – there is a fair amount of walking and stair-climbing.
  • Bring a light jacket; the summit can be breezy and cooler than the city.
  • Dress respectfully at the temples, covering shoulders and knees.
  • Carry cash for cable car tickets, offerings, and snacks.
  • Combine the trip with a visit to the Cao Dai Holy See, also in Tay Ninh.

Whether you come for the pilgrimage, the views, or simply to escape the city for a day, the Ba Den Mountain Spring Festival is one of the most rewarding excursions you can make from Saigon.
