Ben Tre Coconut Festival: A Green Escape into the Mekong Delta

Everyone in southern Vietnam knows the saying: “Ben Tre is the land of coconuts.” This gentle, green province in the Mekong Delta celebrates its most famous crop with the Coconut Festival (Le hoi Dua), a warm, family-friendly event that is a lovely change of pace from the city.

A Province Built on Coconuts

Coconut palms shade almost every canal and garden in Ben Tre, and local families use every part of the tree – water, flesh, oil, and even the shell for crafts. The festival is both a harvest celebration and a proud showcase of a way of life that has shaped the region for generations.

When and Where to Go

The Coconut Festival is not held every single year, so it is worth checking the schedule before you plan. When it runs, it usually takes place in Ben Tre city and nearby districts such as Mo Cay and Chau Thanh, often in the early months of the year or around major holidays. Ben Tre is roughly 2.5 to 3 hours by road from Ho Chi Minh City.

What to See and Do

  • Taste coconut everything – fresh coconut water, coconut candy, coconut ice cream, and savoury dishes cooked with coconut milk.
  • Visit a coconut candy workshop – see how the famous keo dua is made by hand.
  • Take a boat ride – glide through narrow canals lined with water coconut palms.
  • Explore fruit gardens – the delta is a paradise of rambutan, mango, and pomelo.
  • Meet local artisans – mat weaving, brick making, and coconut-shell crafts are still alive here.

Ben Tre is best explored slowly. Stay a night at a riverside homestay, wake up early, and watch the delta come to life on the water.

Local Tips for Foreign Travelers

  • Bring a hat, mosquito repellent, and light long sleeves for the gardens.
  • Try the coconut candy but buy small amounts – it is very sweet.
  • Boat trips are best booked through a reputable local guide.
  • Cash is king in the countryside; ATMs are limited.
  • Combine Ben Tre with nearby My Tho for a fuller Mekong experience.

Green, calm, and full of character, the Ben Tre Coconut Festival is a gentle reminder that some of Vietnam’s best travel moments happen just outside the city.
