Dinh Co Festival in Vung Tau: A Seaside Pilgrimage by the South China Sea

Vung Tau is the closest beach town to Ho Chi Minh City, and each year it hosts one of the coast’s most atmospheric celebrations. The Dinh Co Festival is a lively mix of faith, fishing culture, and seaside fun – an ideal overnight trip for travellers based in Saigon.

A Temple, a Legend, and a Fishing Community

Dinh Co means “the temple on the hill,” and it honours a young woman, Long Hai, who is said to have appeared to fishermen and saved them from storms. Over time she became an important guardian spirit for the coastal community, and the festival grew around her temple overlooking the sea.

When and Where to Go

The festival usually takes place over two or three days in the second and third lunar months, often in March or April. It is held at Dinh Co Temple in Long Hai, on the road between Vung Tau and Ba Ria, in Ba Ria – Vung Tau province. Vung Tau itself is about 2 to 2.5 hours from Ho Chi Minh City.

What to See and Do

  • Watch the sea procession – a decorated boat carries offerings from the temple to the water, accompanied by drums and dragon dances.
  • Join the onshore ceremony – processions, prayers, and traditional music fill the temple grounds.
  • Explore Dinh Co Temple – its hilltop position gives lovely views over the coastline.
  • Relax on the beach – Bai Truoc (Front Beach) and Bai Sau (Back Beach) are perfect for a swim or seafood lunch.
  • Take in the town – the Christ statue, lighthouse, and seafood markets are all worth a stop.

The festival is one of the biggest local events of the year, so book accommodation in Vung Tau well in advance. Roads and temples get very crowded on the main procession day.

Local Tips for Foreign Travelers

  • Dress modestly at the temple and avoid touching the offerings.
  • Bring sunscreen and a hat; the coast is bright and breezy.
  • Seafood is excellent and affordable – try grilled scallops and crab.
  • Beach vendors are friendly but firm; agree on prices before renting chairs or buying.
  • If you stay overnight, catch the sunrise over the sea – it is the best time of day here.

With its blend of devotion, drumbeats, and fresh sea air, the Dinh Co Festival is a wonderful way to experience coastal Vietnamese culture on a short break from MAMA HOUSE.
