Nghinh Ong Festival in Can Gio: A Coastal Celebration by the Sea

Just an hour from the bustle of downtown Saigon, Can Gio is a world of mangroves, fishing villages, and open sea. Each year this coastal district celebrates the Nghinh Ong Festival – a whale-worship ceremony that is one of southern Vietnam’s most distinctive cultural events, and an easy, rewarding day trip from MAMA HOUSE.

The Whale That Saves Fishermen

In Vietnamese coastal belief, the whale (locally called “Ong”, or “Mister Whale”) is a sacred protector of fishermen, said to guide boats home and rescue those in danger at sea. The festival is a way of honouring that bond and giving thanks for a safe season on the water.

When and Where to Go

The Nghinh Ong Festival is usually held in the eighth lunar month, around September, and lasts two to three days. The main ceremonies take place at the Whale Temple (Lang Ong) in Can Thanh town, Can Gio district, about 50 km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City. The route crosses the mangroves of the Can Gio Biosphere Reserve.

What to See and Do

  • Watch the procession – an ornate palanquin carrying the whale bones is paraded through the streets with drums, flags, and lion dances.
  • Visit the Whale Temple – home to a collection of whale bones and offerings from grateful fishermen.
  • Explore the mangroves – the Can Gio Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO-listed landscape of waterways and wildlife.
  • See the monkeys – the nearby Monkey Island is a favourite stop for families.
  • Eat fresh seafood – Can Gio is a great place for crab, prawns, and clams by the water.

Can Gio is best reached by car or motorbike via the Binh Khanh ferry. The ferry can be busy on festival mornings, so leave the city early to avoid long waits.

Local Tips for Foreign Travelers

  • Check the local dates each year, as the lunar calendar shifts the festival.
  • Bring sun protection and water – the coastal sun is strong.
  • Keep an eye on your belongings at the Monkey Island; the monkeys are bold!
  • Respect the temple customs and ask before photographing ceremonies up close.
  • Combine the festival with a mangrove boat tour for a full day out.

For travellers who want both culture and coastline without going far, the Nghinh Ong Festival in Can Gio offers an authentic, unhurried slice of southern Vietnamese life.
